STILL LIFE PHOTO ASSIGNMENT

STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
What constitutes a still life photo?
Still life photography is the photographic counterpart of still life painting. The still life approach uses inanimate objects, found or intentionally arranged, to communicate or symbolize an idea, concept, or relationship. Common subjects for still life photography include items such as flowers, food, plants, rocks, etc...
(but those things are just a starting point... if you watch the video in step #3 below, you will learn of famous photographers who used a different approach for their subject matter).

Why shoot still life images?
Shooting still life subjects is one of the best ways to sharpen your photographic skills. Good composition, framing and lighting are all very important to translate your still life arrangement into a great photo. One advantage of the still-life artform is that it allows the photographer a lot of freedom to experiment with the lighting & arrangement of elements within a composition -you can take your time and your subject remains stationary. Here's an interesting fact from Wikipedia about still life as an artform. "Still life painting emerged as a distinct genre and professional specialization in Western painting by the late 16th century, and has remained significant since then." So by shooting still life images you are connecting with an artistic tradition that dates to the Middle Ages.

SHOOTING TIPS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT:
•Siplicity is very important when composing still life’s.
•You don’t need to collect a wide range of complicated objects to create an interesting picture. Instead, choose a few objects with a common thread.
•The arrangement of a still life should begin with the positioning of a single dominant subject. Then add other objects one at a time, and examine the arrangement through your smartphone or camera’s viewfinder.
•Still life photos are about eliminating unwanted details in your image.  Think in terms of image composition we’ve discussed throughout the year.
•Put the objects in beautiful diffused window light, or dramatic sidelight with shadows, and use interesting compositions.

THIRD• SUBMISSION IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM
FINAL PRODUCT: SUBMIT TWO STILL LIFE images in Google Classroom.
Pick your two best still life photos.
•Use your phone app to crop your images.
