The Terrifying Reality Behind Filming "Free Solo"
How I climbed a 3,000-foot vertical cliff -without ropes
Free Solo is a 2018 American documentary film directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyiand Jimmy Chin that profiles rock climber Alex Honnold on his quest to perform a free solo climb of El Capitan in June 2017.
You may be wondering, why are we watching a climbing documentary for open Trojan Time?
A couple reasons.
First. Alex Honnold's achievement is staggering.
Two. It totally aligns with what we're talking about when we talk about STAND -Safety, Togetherness, Aspire, Never Give Up & Diversity.
How does STAND look when applied in real life, by people at the top of their game?
I tell you, it's real. You can see a lot of the STAND Philosophy in the way these people walk their path. That's why I'm sharing it with you.
Although you may never free solo El Cap, it never hurts to aspire to be a master.
Instead of watching the documentary, which is more than an hour long, we are going to watch a couple videos that take a look behind the scenes. It reveals the character of these people and the physical and psychological struggles they faced while engaged in this epic challenge -and how they used safety, togetherness, aspire and never give up to succeed in their quest.
When we finish with each documentary, let's talk about some of your thoughts about these amazing people, their back stories, their courage and character.
