EXTERNAL FLASH •FILL-FLASH & BOUNCE FLASH ASSIGNMENT
SHOOT EXAMPLES OF 2 FLASH TECHNIQUES: "FILL FLASH" & "BOUNCE FLASH"
This assignment is an introduction to the external flash or "speedlight." To start, we will use it on-camera to shoot fill-flash (similar to the assignment that you shot last year) and bounce flash, but for this shoot you will be using an external flash.

FLASH TECHNIQUE #1 "FILL FLASH"

•SHOOT "BEFORE" AND "AFTER" FILL-FLASH PHOTOS, USING THE EXTERNAL FLASH TO LIGHTEN SHADOWS.

CAMERA SETTINGS FOR FILL FLASH

•Put the camera exposure setting on “P," "AV" or "TV" mode
•Set your ISO to 100 (or if in you're in shade you could use 200 ISO).
•If in the shade, pick an aperture like f/4, if in the birght sun, pick an f/stop of about f11 or f/16
•USE THE FLASH In "ETTL MODE"
•DIAL THE THE "FLASH EXPOSURE COMPENSAITON" (FEC) UP OR DOWN TO ADJUST THE FLASH BRIGHTNESS ON YOUR SUBJECT.

SHOOT YOUR SUBJECT "BEFORE & AFTER" USING FILL-FLASH

•STEP #1 Photograph your subject in a well-lit area (even backlit) outside, without using flash!
•STEP #2Keep your subject in the SAME SPOT AS YOUR FIRST PHOTO!
•Photograph them using the external flash.
Use the external flash for your second photo.
•Point the flash directly at your subject -make sure you use the FEC to adjust the brightness of the flash up or down, as needed
•Make sure you are about 3-5 feet(ish) from your subject
•You will see evidence of direct on-camera fill-flash, which will lighten the shadows, but will produce a hard shadow and may put highlights on their skin.
•Submit your "BEFORE & AFTER" fill flash assignment like the example below....

FLASH TECHNIQUE #2 "BOUNCE FLASH"

•SHOOT IMAGES USING A YOUR FLASH "BOUNCED" OFF THE CEILING OR WALL

CAMERA EXPOSURE SETTINGS FOR "BOUNCE FLASH"
•Set your ISO to 200 if outside in open shade, or If inside, use 800 or 1600 ISO.
•Put the camera exposure setting on “P," "AV" or "TV" mode.
•In dim indoor lighting, or the shade, pick an aperture like f/2.8 or f/4.

"FLASH" MENU SETTINGS TO SHOOT BOUNCE FLASH
•POINT THE FLASH AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE TOWARD THE CEILING, OR ANGLE IT SIDEWAYS TOWARD A WHITE-COLORED WALL, BOUNCING THE FLASH BACK TOWARD YOUR SUBJECT.
•USE THE FLASH "ETTL MODE" AND THE "FLASH EXPOSURE COMPENSATION" (FEC)
TO ADJUST THE FLASH BRIGHTNESS ON YOUR SUBJECT.

SHOOT YOUR "BEFORE & AFTER" USING BOUNCE FLASH
•STEP #1 Photograph your subject inside or outside, without using flash!
•STEP #2Keep your subject in the SAME SPOT AS YOUR FIRST PHOTO!
•Use
"BOUNCE FLASH" to light your subject for your second photo.
•Point the flash at a 45 degree angle at the ceiling or adjacent wall.
•Make sure you use the FEC to adjust the brightness of the flash up or down, as needed.
•Make sure you are about 3-5 feet(ish) from your subject
•You will see evidence of direct on-camera bounce-flash, which will lighten the shadows, but will produce softer shadows than fill-flash.
•Submit your "BEFORE & AFTER" bounce flash assignment like the example below....

Tips to help you with bounce flash
•Use the FEC setting to increase/decrease exposure as needed.
•Use the "fill card" on the top of the flash to create additional fill when bouncing.
•Angle the flash head at a 45 degree angle to increase the light on the subject.
•Rotate the flash head as needed to bounce your light off adjacent surfaces.
•This takes patience and practice, but can yeild nice results.
